February 19, 2007. Chinese New Year

"Today we celebrated Chinese New Year at the centre
tell some stories, we distributed red envelopes, kids
put up lantern crafts, and we had a special afternoon
tea of asian jelly for the kids and dumplings for the
staff. It was very nice and we could tell the parents
(chinese, vietnamese, korean, malaysian...) all
appreciated it. Also got to visit Sr. Margaret's mum
this weekend after a nice stroll in the Melbourne
Chinatown, attended the vigil Vietnamese new year
mass, and had a nice lunch of take-out Chinese food
with the community. I greatly appreciated everyone's
generosity and thoughtfulness to make Clayton a
home away from home, complete with cultural
celebrations. :) A couple weekends ago I also went to
the convent in Scoresby to help prepare lunch while
the sisters met for their financial treasury with Sr.
Edna Mary again! She sends her 'special, special
love' to you (and the other SA sisters), in her own
words. :) I believe she is off now in Samoa, visiting a
sister there who is is some stage of her profession.

Anyhow, have a wonderful week and thanks always
for your guidance, encouragement, and prayers.

My best wishes and prayers, as always.

Iris"

March 14, 2007.  Kindergarten Kids.

"I've been well and can't believe I'm already in my 8th
week! As a short update - I'm currently working as
rostered staff in the kindergarten (4 yr old) room and
timing is great as there are a handful of new Chinese
speaking kids starting around this time of year and it's
nice to help ease them in. :) Also challenging, but
interesting has been interacting and teaching the two
children in our class with autism - Carla and Nic, who
have very different personalities and require varying
amounts of attention and approach strategies. Yet in
the special moments when they're calm and can
connect with you, their sweet nature emerges in
simple yet beautiful interactions..and it makes me
smile more than anything. In a couple of weekends I'll
be joining some of the novices and younger sisters at
a formation retreat/camp by the beach. I'm quite
excited and grateful for the sisters to have extended
the invitation to me and look forward to what I'll get to
learn in our faith sharing. :)"
