The following excerpt is a pulpit talk given by Jamie on March
service in San Antonio:
work in downtown San Antonio with VIDES USA which is a mission
organization run by the Salesian sisters. I was at mass in August
of last year when Sister Gloria and Suzanna (another volunteer
my name is Jamie Young and I am currently doing mission
Hellowork in downtown San Antonio with VIDES USA which is a
mission organization run by the Salesian sisters. I was at mass in
August of last year when Sister Gloria and Suzanna (another
volunteer missioner) came to share the mission of this
organization to our parish. I was home visiting my parents that
weekend. Two weeks prior to that mass I was looking up mission
organizations on line and did not know which one to join. It makes
sense that there would be Catholic mission organizations, I was
just not aware of any at that time. I had come to a cross roads in
my life and was not sure exactly what direction the Lord was
leading me until that day.
I graduated from Texas A&M in August of 2004 (those of you that
are Longhorn fans please don’t hold that against me). I majored in
Psychology and when I graduated I moved to the Kerrville area for
a few months and worked with youth who were removed from their
homes due to abuse and neglect. After that I moved to East Texas
and worked for the local Mental Health Mental Retardation
Authority. I was a service coordinator for individuals with Special
Needs. This is when I realized my life calling to work with Special
Needs individuals. I moved back to the San Antonio area last July
hoping to find a job teaching Special Needs individuals. I was
accepted into an Alternative Certification Teaching program. I
looked for jobs in the teaching field but God obviously had other
plans for me at this time in my life.
I have always felt a calling to mission work. The Sunday
morning that I was sitting in mass listening to Sister Gloria and
Suzanna talk about VIDES I felt an overwhelming sense of peace
that came from knowing what the Lord wanted for me at this time
in my life. As I listened to Sister Gloria speak I knew that the
Salesian order sounded familiar but I couldn’t figure out why. I
glanced at my mom and dad and they both had smiles on their
faces, like they knew that I had just received my calling.
When we got out to the car and began to talk about this mission
organization they asked me if I knew why the Salesian order
sounded familiar. I told them that I couldn’t place it. They
reminded me that my grandfather who was not catholic and was
not a particularly spiritual man until about ten years before his
death started donating money to this organization and he
received these poem booklets in return. When he died my
Grandmother found a whole drawer full of these booklets and she
called me and asked if I would like them, I told her I would love
that. To these days those are some of my most precious
possessions. The order he used to donate to was the Salesians. I
don’t believe in coincidences so needless to say I answered the
call and my life has not been the same since.
I am currently serving in San Antonio working in St. John Bosco
School helping teach 2nd grade as well as coaching the schools
junior high softball team. I live in the convent with ten sisters and
really enjoy it. It has been quite an adjustment but I have learned
a lot from these women and have grown spiritually thanks to their
guidance, support, and love. I tell them all the time that it’s like I
have many grandmothers, a sister, and a mother all under one
roof. They are always looking out for me.
I am going to be going to Kigali Rwanda Africa in August. I will be
there approximately nine months working in the orphanage
teaching English and doing whatever else the sisters need me to
do. I am very excited about this opportunity as well as
nervous. It is going to take quite a bit of money to get me there
and pay for necessities while I’m there. Every little bit helps and
those of you that can not support me monetarily if you could keep
me in your prayers that would be greatly appreciated and that is
just as important as the monetary donations if not more so.
I think that my mission ties into the second reading today quite
well. We are called to be imitators of Christ. This parish has
already been so supportive to this mission and are truly imitating
Christ in their generosity and helping to further the kingdom of
God. Also, during this time of Lent it is a great opportunity to give
alms and to keep those less fortunate in our prayers in a special
way and strive to obtain solidarity with those brothers and sisters.
One last thought I would like to leave ya’ll with. "God does
not choose the qualified but qualifies the chosen." The quote says
it all.
