Quotes about the Vacation Bible School at Westway Apartments:
"We held our breaths as we awaited for the kids to come.
It was already five-past-four and only one kid had arrived. We
were planning for as many as 50 kids!! Then we breathed and
began to tackle this problem. Sister Theresa Jones suggested
that some of us make phone calls to the parents who had
registered their children, so some of the volunteers went through
the registration forms and began calling. Theresa, Paul and
Tarry saw a few kids outside playing basketball and made a
bargain with them, 'If we play basketball with you, then you'll join
us for the Bible Camp. It will be lots of fun!' The children
consented. Gabe, Iris and Marco decided that it would be a good
idea to go door-to-door to recruit some more kids. Amanda was
unable to help out with the recruiting because she had to retrieve
the power strip at the convent. When Amanda returned back to
Westway, she was shocked to see that there were more than 20
kids!! That was just the beginning of a fun-filled memorable Bible
Camp. The theme for the camp was, 'Jesus is our Savior.' And in
the midst of the panic, Jesus affirmed once more that He indeed is
our Savior."
"There were so many activities that we wanted to do with the kids.
There was singing and dancing, mini theatre, small group
time, crafts, snacks and games. We had to compress all these
activities in two short hours. My favorite activity was the theatre
because that was a time when everyone was together, including
the volunteers, and the children were able to sit still for more than
five minutes."
"This was the first year we held a Bible Camp here and given
the circumstances, it was wonderful. The children were really
receptive of us and sang and danced joyfully to the Lord. On the
third day of the camp, ten of the children arrived at the camp
before we did. They were excited to start the Bible Camp!"
"He was the tough kid. The one you expect in every class. The
first day he seemed reluctant to fully participate in the activities,
especially the singing and dancing. His name was Alex. As
he was one of the older kids, he did not want to appear 'childish',
but rather tough. And tough guys don't sing, and they definitely
don't dance. But he continued to come back, day by day. The
reasons why may never be known. He may have liked being with
his friends, playing the games or watching the skits. He could
have even liked the Bible stories or the love which the volunteers
showed him. The volunteers continued to encourage him to
participate and to do the motions to the songs. Slowly but surely
he became more involved, and by the end of the camp, he
enjoyed the songs. Alex is remembered by the volunteers
because, his story is just one example of how persistant love can
truly touch the hearts of all people."
